CANOGA PARK,CA-Sasha Jyote Singh and Tanishaa Singh won top Sikh Heritage Awards in high and middle school academic categories at the 1st Sikh American Heritage Society awards function held on August 12, at Royal Delhi Palace Banquet Hall, here. Navneet Kaur Sandhu who got $1000. Besides recognizing and rewarding applicants in the academic category, Sasha Jyote was also recognized and given an award of $750 for her community service during 10th to 12th grade in and outside school. Tanishaa Singh won the top award in the middle school category. The second-place winner was Anand Juskeerat Singh while the third-place winner was Maya Singh. The next three winners were Mahekdeep Kaur, Harmanpreet Kaur and Sarina. Maya Singh and Tanishaa Singh also won the first and 2nd place award in Visual and Performing Arts category.
The scholarship initiative was founded by Jagdish Khnagura, a Los Angeles based engineer turned businessman. He also started a scholarship scheme in Punjab, in memory of his grandfather, Kartar Singh Dukki, a Gadar hero, who was incharge of Gadar Press in San Francisco, in 1913-14. All the scholarship winners in the Visual and Performing Arts Category, Sarina, Maya Singh, Juskeerat Singh Anand and Tanishaa Singh presented a very entertaining cultural program emceed by Baljit Toor. There were a few other performances by members of the community.
Gurcharan Singh Bains, in welcoming the attendees, appreciated the support of the sponsors, and also thanked the judges who evaluated the applicants and volunteers who worked hard to make the event a success.
Jagdish Khangura, the chief sponsor of the program, introduced the Guest of Honor,Kavi Raz. He thanked i Raz for bringing Punjab’s history alive by making the movie ‘The Black Prince.’ In his introduction, he said, “Kavi Raz is the first South Asian actor to appear as a regular in a Hollywood TV series, “St Elsewhere” opening doors to many who followed in his footsteps.”
