PHOENIX,AZ- A group of about 50 Sikhs ranging in age from five years to 80 plus years gathered at Sky Harbor International Airport here to donate gift cards worth $11,000 dollars to the TSA employees who continued on their job taking care of passenger safety during the government shut down despite interruption in paychecks. in the form of $20 denomination gift cards from Costco for needy TSA employees.
A large 5 feet by 2 and half feet check was prepared that showed a turban with a statement borrowed from the National Sikh Campaign “We are Sikhs.” Underneath was added “Serving Humanity is Our Religion.”
Phoenix Councilwoman Kate Gallegos was at hand and joined the TSA recipients that included chief TSA union and other leaders and officials.
Sikh representatives spoke and mentioned that serving the needy is part of their religion and wearing turbans is part of their faith. TSA leaders were also told that American values were Sikh values and equality is the hallmark of their faith. A representative from the TSA spoke and thanked the Sikh community for their gesture.
