PHOENIX, AZ - The Sikh Community here was once again in the limelight when a six year old Sikh boy , Anaik Singh Sachdev, the grandson of Dr. Jaswant Singh Sachdev, was contacted by Kate Gallego, the recently elected Mayor of Phoenix, to read the Pledge of Allegiance at her inauguration ceremony. Over 1,000 Phoenicians had gathered on March 21 morning at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Phoenix to witness this grand event.
Gallego was declared the candidate after beating her rival Daniel Valenzuela in the March 12 runoff elections.She became the 61st mayor and the second woman elected to this high office in more than three decades. The event started with a singing band followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by Anaik Singh which then led to the oath ceremony.
The mayor then spoke about her concerns for minority communities with special reference to Sikh community particularly mentioning the difficult time the Sikh community has been through. By asking Anaik Singh a Sikh boy with a Patka to take part in the ceremony, she tried to prove the point that everyone is welcome and will be treated equally in her city irrespective of faith color and creed. She commented and complimented the diversity of Phoenix, especially the Sikh community of Arizona for their consistent and constant support in the matter of civic affairs and their contribution towards the growth and progress of the city.
