BUENA PARK,CA – Over 300 people gathered at the Jain Center of Southern California to kick off Diwali on Nov 2. ”ROSHANI” – A Diwali program was jointly organized by JCSC and Sankara Eye Foundation and was raised. SEF whose sole purpose is to bring light to many lives. What a way to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, than by bringing people together to raise funds for the visually challenged.
Dr. Jasvant Modi, president of JCSC, a well-known a philanthropist. He said, “Making money is hard but giving up money is even harder. It should be that making money should be fun but donating money for a good cause should be even more fun and satisfying.” Ramesh Shah and family donated $20,000 for a Sankara Eye Hospital in Mumbai. Dr. Modi further challenged the audience to donate more and said he would match dollar for dollar up to $5000.
Murli Krishnamurti, founder of SEF USA said in his address that in 1998 they were doing 8,000 free surgeries every year which has grown now in 2018 to eight hospitals performing 150,000 free surgeries every year. The ninth hospital was inaugurated in Jaipur, Rajasthan and more hospitals are being built in Mumbai, Indore, and Hyderabad.
This joyous evening got even more exciting when Rram Talsidar and Bhavna Chawla’s melodious voices filled the air. Attendees danced to favorite Bollywood hits. The evening ended with a gift of sumptuous vegan mithai for everyone.
