through Basant in the Gurmat Sangeet tradition, Basant Kirtan Darbar was organized by Bhai Mardana Institute of Gurmat Sangeet here at Gurdwara Singh Sabha on Feb 20. Ustaad Ranjit Singh, founder of Bhai Mardana Institute of Gurmat Sangeet speaking on the occasion said Basant Raag has special significance in Gurmat Sangeet and signifies the joyous and blossoming state of mind when the internal self becomes God conscious. He thanked all participating Raagi Jathas and congregation members for their presence. He performed Kirtan of a Shabad, “Tu Kahe Garbe Baavli” in traditional Raag, Basant Bahaar. In addition, he sang ‘Thumri’ a light classical devotional musical tradition written and sang originally by Gian Singh Almast.
One of the highlights of the Kirtan Darbar was a mesmerizing performance by Giani Beant Singh ‘Bijli’, a highly acclaimed traditional musician and Kirtniya. He along with Ustaad Ranjit Singh, Bhai Gopal Singh, Balwinder Singh and Gurcharan Singh recited Shabad,”Kavan Gun Pranpat Millo Meri Mai” in Raag Basant Bahaar.
Davinder Partap Singh, who specially flew from a town near Niagara Falls, did Kirtan of Shabad “Basant Charea Phooli Banrai” in an antiquated Raaga tradition called ‘Budda Basant’. He recited another Shabad “Man Kahan Bisaryo Ram Naam” in age old tradition called ‘Adana Ki Bhaar’. Bhai Harbaljeet Singh and Jatha visiting from El Sobrante, did Kirtan of two Shabada and also sang in the conventional ‘Basant Ki Chowki’ style as is done at Darbar Sahib, Amritsar.The first Shabad, “Is Man Ko Basant Ki Lagge Na Soe” composed in Raag Basant Purbi with Mat Taal (rhythm) on Tabla. The second Shabad was ‘Maoli Dharti Maolia Akaash’ of Bhagat Kabir, composed in ‘Sudh Basant’ in Teen Taal rhythm.
Bhavandeep Singh Jakhmi performed Kirtan of two Shabads in Basant Hindool, “Terian Bhagtan Ko Balihara” in Per Taal rhythm and “Surah Ki Jaisi Teri Chaal” in Teen Taal. Bhai Varinder Singh from Khalsa Care Foundation performed Kirtan of Shabad “Kat Jayea Re Ghar Laago Rang”. Sur Shabad Parivar Women Jatha recited ‘Aab Kalu Aayo Rey’ composed in Raag Basant Bahar in Teen Taal rhythm. Jatha was all dressed in traditional ‘basanti’ (yellow) color suites.
Sur Shabad Parivar Children Jatha recited ‘Banaspat Maoli Chariya Basant’ in Raag Basant Purbi. Bhai Gopal Singh, Hazoori Raagi of Gurdwara Buena Park performed Kirtan of Shabad “Kat Jayea Re Ghar Laago Rang” composed in Raag Basant in Teen Taal rhythm. Highlights of the event were use of ‘Tanti Saaz’, the string musical instrument including Swarmandal, Tanpura, Mandolin, Dilruba and Violin. Kirtan Darbar was emceed by Ravinder Kaur Dhaliwal.
