in memory of S. Ujjaldidar Singh, a bright, young, Amritdhari Gursikh who passed away in an accident in July of 1993. Gurpreet Sarin, a graduate of the University of Maryland this year’s guest speaker, shared his experience as a contestant and being among the top 40 on ‘American Idol’. He told the children that though he looked different, his identity allowed him to stand out amongst the crowd. A true inspiration of humility, Sarin concluded his speech by gathering all the children on stage and reciting “nam simran” together. The day comprised of various competitions in kirtan, tabla, speech, poetry, turban-tying, gatka, basketball, Gurbani memory, reading, and scholarships for college-bound students. All children received a certificate for their participation, and those under 5, a special trophy. This year’s competition was fierce, so fierce that there were ties in speech, dastarbandi, and even basketball. Children as young as one not only competed but placed in this year’s competition as well.
One of the highlights this year was the college scholarships. Every year several high school applicants receive $500 scholarships from USMF. However this year, not only were there six scholarships, but a generous family matched each of the $500 scholarships.
