the money. Donors and their families attended Kirtans at the gurdwara. In between Kirtans at about noon, the donors were brought to the front of the Kirtan hall and in the presence of the congregation, the head granthi honored them with a long sacred orange scarf. Additionally, the donors were presented with plaques, a more permanent form of appreciation. “The families were recognized with a marble plaque with their names, donation date, and donation amount,” said Dr. Amarjit Singh Marwah, one of the donors and emcee for the event.
The plaque stated, “Management Committee would like to acknowledge the special donors who helped in the initial construction of the new building.”
The original building was demolished in the early 1990s and in order to build a new facility the Gurudwara needed the community’s help. People were donating but not enough to make the new building a reality as quickly as desired. So, Dr. Amarjit Singh Marwah loaned the Gurudwara $500,000 and his friends: Dr. Ajit Singh Arora, Dr. Mukthiar Singh Kundi, Ajit Singh Randhawa, and Dr. Jagjit Singh Sehdeva loaned $100,000 each. With their generous loans, the funds for the new building were accrued.
“We wanted to honor the individuals who donated money to construct the Gurudwara,” said Baldev Johal, President of Hollywood Sikh Temple.Since the loan money has not been returned for all these years and there does not seem to be any foresight of the money being returned, something to honor the individuals had to be done. “It was important that we pay our respects and thank the contributors to the building especially since some of the donors have passed away already,” said Marwah. Upon completion of the dedicatory ceremony, the Kirtans continued and langar was offered to all.
