AMRITSAR - As culmination of the week-long activities to mark Amritsar Foundation Day, residents of the city on June 27 walked in procession through city streets from Sri Akal Takht Gate, Harmandir Sahib. off the march, praised the cleaning work conducted by the organization on various religious sites the day before. The procession was led by horseback riders from the Nihang Sangathan Kheyala Jatha, followed by people from all walks of life and culminated in a citizens meet at the historic Ram Bagh Gardens. Sharing his views about the initiative and celebrating Amritsar’s 437th year of existence, Gunbir Singh, Chairman, EcoAmritsar said, “The inspiration behind the movement is Bhagat Puran Singh, who as an environmentalist, and as a messiah of the destitute, was acknowledged as the motivation for action in the city.”
Stakeholders of the city, were felicitated with Appreciation Awards and tree saplings. Ravi Bhagat, Deputy Commissioner asked each student and citizen to take a pledge to plant and nurture one tree every year and continue nurturing it for three years.
Eco-Amritsar, under the aegis of Sikh organization Eco-Sikh, based in Washington, D.C, had collaborated with various city groups to celebrate its foundation day with projects to generate safety and environmental awareness among residents.
Gunbir Singh, Chairman of Eco-Amritsar, said, Dr. Rajwant Singh from Eco-Sikh participated in the activities and spoke to the media about the programs being conducted by the organization.
