REDONDO BEACH, CA – Sarika Bhakta, student of Viji Prakash, the founder-director the Shakti School of Dance, performed her Bharata Natyam arangetram at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center here, on Aug.23. She began with the traditional invocation to Lord Ganesh, to lyrics adopted from a Hindi bhajan.
The young dancer then exhibited some complex rhythms in the Jathiswaram. She continued her focus on Lord Ganesh in her Varnam performed to raga Charukesi in adi talam. She rendered the piece competently, nicely highlighting the abhinaya aspect as well as the nritta. The Kauthuvam to the popular Devi Stuthi and homage to the Lord of dance, Nataraja to the well known ‘Natanama Adinar’ was then performed by Sarika. But what captured the audience’s attention was the piece choreographed to the Kabir bhajan ‘Hansa Ye Pinjra Nahi Tera,’ which spoke of non-attachment to material things and danced with proficiency by Sarika.
The performance concluded with the Thillana and the Mangalam, which the dancer dedicated to her late grandfather. The musicians at the arangetram were Vanathy Raghuraman (vocal), Mahesh Swamy (flute and vocals), Shiva Ramamurthi (violin) and Lingaraju Lee (mridangam). Sarika is a recent graduate of Whitney High in Cerritos and is now a freshman at New York University.
