SANTA BARBARA, CA - California Attorney General Kamala Harris, whom President Barack Obama had called “by far the best-looking attorney general,” married fellow attorney Douglas Emhoff at the courthouse in Santa Barbara on Aug. 22. The attorney general’s sister, Maya Harris, officiated the ceremony. The ceremony also included the bride’s niece, Meena, reading from Maya Angelou’s poem “Touched by an Angel.”

The wedding was a quiet one. Harris’ office provided few details except a photograph. However, reports indicate that the ceremony saw a mix of both Indian and Jewish tradition. Emhoff is said to have punctuated the service with the traditional Jewish breaking of the glass, while another report said that in keeping with the bride’s heritage, a flowered garland was placed around the groom’s neck.Harris wore a golden dress by a California designer and wrote her own vows, as did her groom. The newlyweds danced to Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Like a Star.” Harris plans a mid-September party at the Presidio to celebrate with all her friends and political pals sources said.mThe wedding was held five months after Harris and Emhoff, partner in charge of the law firm Venable LLP’s Los Angeles office, were engaged. Both Harris and Emhoff are 49. It is Harris’ first marriage. Emhoff was previously divorced.
