CERRITOS, CA – Jaya Hemnani’s art exhibition ‘Dancescape’ reflecting the rich Indian dance traditions is currently being showcased at the Cerritos library. The exhibit also spotlights oil paintings of traditional folk art like Tanjore, Patachitra and Madhubani. The vibrant colors,
the detailed ornamentation and the photo-like quality makes each painting come to life. The artist’s eye for detail, light and shade, transparency and reflection lend them a mystery and magic. The paintings on dance included ‘Kathakali’ of Kerala, ‘Oddissi’ from Orissa and ‘Theyyam’ folk dance of Kerala. Growing up, Hemnani says she learned Bharata Natyam, the dance form from Tamil Nadu and her passion for dance comes alive in her paintings. She said if she was not an artist, she would have been a dancer. In addition to the dance paintings, there were contemporary themes, which explored the moods of nature, emotions and more subdued color schemes. Among these, ‘Waiting’ and ‘My Best Friend’ has been appreciated by a lot of patrons visiting the library, the artist said. The Cerritos exhibition runs to the end of Sept. and will move on Oct.7 to the Mary Paxton Gallery, Norwalk until Nov.1.
