REDONDO BEACH, CA - Sahana Matthews, performed her Bharata Natyam arangetram on Sept.7 at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, here in the presence of friends and family. A student of the Shakti School of Dance, the young artiste began her recital with the Pushpanjali and the Todiya Mangalam.
She then went on to display her dexterity in nritta in the Hamsadwani Jathiswaram. It was Lord Muruga that Sahana chose to delineate on, in the Varnam. Confidently she played the nayika seeking out a rendezvous with her beloved, nicely incorporating abhinaya that bespoke of her yearning. Nataraja, the lord of dance, was evoked next in eka talam in ragam Sindhu Bhairavi.
The extraordinary compositions of Papanasam Sivan and Oothukadu Venkatasubbiar were then in the forefront of the dancer’s recital as she performed the Devi Sthuthi and joyously displayed the pranks of Lord Krishna.
Sahana, a high school senior, comes from a family of performers. She is the great grand daughter of N.S.Krishnan and T.A. Mathuram and like herself, her mother too was under the tutelage of Guru Viji Prakash. While her Guru from onstage provided encouragement and the nattuvangam, others who provided musical accompaniment were Vanathy Raghuraman, vocal; Mahesh Swamy, flute and vocal; Lingaraju Lee, mridangam and Krishna Kutty, violin.
