GRANADA HILLS, CA -Papaya Tree Nursery located here is a small retail business that specializes in offering edible landscaping choices. This nursery has been in business for nearly 30 years and offers an assortment of options to choose from a variety of locals. The fruits are from a selection of tropical, subtropical,
and temperate species. Tropical fruits are mangos, bananas, pineapples and many more that thrive in hot climates. Subtropical fruits can handle cold weather and a dryer climate. Temperate fruits like apples, peaches, plums and many more require cold temperatures. Fruits that come from the Indian subcontinent are mango, cardamom, curry leaves, starfruit, makrut, and calamondin.
The man who now wears many hats as the owner and operator of Papaya Tree Nursery, Alex Silber, was not just handed the business he had to earn the business from his parents.
“I had to train and once I was good enough I officially became the owner,” said Silber. Prior to earning the business from his parents, Alex had to work hard to learn and comprehend all of the various aspects that go into keeping the fruits alive. He has unofficially and officially been growing up with the business. “I have been involved with the business for about 14 years,” said Silber.
He reveals that the featured fruits and the popularity of the fruits varies from time to time. This month’s featured fruits are Surinam cherries, cherimoya, sapodilla, jaboticaba, and papaya red lady dwarf. Additionally, this year’s most popular fruit has been sitafal or the custard apple. Even fruits have relatives; the cherimoya and the sitafal are related to each other.
Alex’s parents took the time and effort to figure out which fruits would thrive in the fluctuating climate of California. These fruits must be flexible in order to survive in the extreme California weather.
“My parents spent a lot of time evaluating the performance of the given species,” said Silber.
Most of these fruit trees grow high and tall. However, the fruit trees offered by Papaya Tree Nursery are categorized as dwarfs or semi-dwarfs.Which means that the height of these trees will not be taller than 12 feet.
When customers come to the nursery they see a mini display orchid. They are offered samples of the available fruits that are in season to taste. The main idea of the nursery is to have a variety of fruits.
He speaks about the ‘Miracle Fruit.’At three-quarters of an inch long and a quarter inch thick this small, red, berry like fruit with a mild taste changes the perspective of taste in the mouth. This ‘Miracle Fruit’ changes the taste buds in the mouth to taste anything that once was sour to sweet. After taking one bite of this fruit nothing will taste sour, not even a lemon!
“We offer folks easy ways to turn their yard into a mini orchid with the idea of having a different fruit to eat every month of the year,” said Silber. Papaya Tree Nursery is a small business that has been in the Silber family for years and has grown with them just like the fruits of their business have been with them and grown with them for many years.
