NEW YORK , NY — Malala Yousafzai the 16-year-old Pakistani education activist who was shot in the head by the Taliban and has gained worldwide acclaim, was honored at the Glamour Women of the Year awards at Carnegie Hall here on Nov 11.
Among the other women honored were big names in the music industry like Barbara Streisand with the Lifetime Acheivement award, Lady Gaga, and political bigwigs like Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords by Hillary Clinton. But it was Malala who hogged the limelight hands down. As a group of young girls from the balcony screamed “We love you, Malala!” blowing back a kiss in response Malala proceeded to give her speech opening with lines which have now become famous, “I believe the gun has no power because a gun can only kill, but a pen can give life.”
Sahar Saleem, 22, a student at New York University, caught up with Malala during the event.
