IRVINE,C.A.- Dharma Civiliza-tional Foundation (DCF) signed a historic gift- agreement with the University of California, Irvine (UCI), to establish the first endowed chair at UCI titled “Thakkar family - Dharma Civilization Foundation Endowed chair in Indic Civilization and Vedic studies”, at a total cost of 2 million dollars here on...

Jan 22 here.Half a million will be contributed by DCF, 1 million by the Thakkar family and half a million by the UC President. An endowed chair will remain dedicated to the given name and to the defined field for perpetuity. The chair is the very first under the network of many such chairs, centers and institutions that DCF aspires to build at various university campuses, over the next several years.
The gift-agreement was signed at the UCI campus, by the Dean of Humanities, Georges Van Den Abbeele and Prof. Shiva Bajpai, President DCF; Dr. Manohar Shinde, Chairman Emeritus DCF and Rajesh Thakkar on behalf of Dr. Ushakant Thakkar, Chairman DCF, and Heidi Harriman, on behalf of Irma Thakkar, (since they both were out of the country) and Dr. Vinod Ambastha, Senior Vice President, DCF.
Prominent persons present at the ceremony included, Carolyn White, the Executive director of development, UCI; Prof. Keith Nelson, former head of Religious studies program at UCI & Prof. Gerald Larson, former Swami Vivekananda Fellow in Dharma Studies at UCI, and Rajkumar Maini, Dr. Balasubramaniam,Ulhas Balasubramaniam, Dr. Harvinder Sahota, Shri Yogesh Shah & Dr. Jaswant Modi.
At the event, Abbeele, Nelson, Larson, Bajpai and Shinde spoke at length, on the history of the effort to establish this chair over the last three years and the broader vision of this initiative, reiterating the mission and goals of DCF to establish such a Chair for teaching accurate and authentic and research of Indic Civilization, Vedic Studies, India-related studies at prominent centers of education in the US. Bajpai underlined in particular, that it is important not only for the persons of Indian origin to know who they are and what their unique culture is, but also equally important for the others in the larger community to have this knowledge.
