LOS ANGELES, CA - Zubin Mehta looked up at the grey skies in otherwise perennially sunny Los Angeles and remarked, “This looks like Bombay.” He informed the crowd of some 70 Los Angelenos that India’s monsoon season had just ended in November. The maestro and his wife Nancy were in Griffith Park planting the Peace Tree to mark the 40th anniversary of Los Angeles Mumbai Sister City, a friendship organization that fosters cultural understanding between the two cities. “I am vey happy to be here representing so many of my countrymen,” said Mehta.
“And I am very happy to represent the American side,” quipped Nancy. “We are the bridge.” The globe-trotting conductor who maintains a residence in Brentwood commented on the expansion of the Indian community. “I have lived here since 1961 and slowly the community has grown, and achieved. Every Indian achieves in America.”

Mira Advani Honeycutt said, “Zubin personifies the ideal of cultural exhange, global outreach and world peace, a message that Sister Cities aim to promote.” Honeycutt noted that planting of the Albizia Julibrissin (silk tree), celebrated more than the organization’s anniversary. “This tree signifies a foundation of friendship and a need for global peace. So we are calling this event as dedication of Peace Tree.”
Guests joined in with the planting - shoveling dirt, adding mulch and watering. Later they enjoyed a casual Indian lunch catered by Mantra restaurant and Neemos Ice Cream. The Mumbai Sister City is among 25 international Sister Cities affiliated with the Sister Cities of Los Angeles and was founded in 1972 as the LA Bombay Sister City. Although the organization’s 40th anniv. was in 2012, its board members decided to move the celebration forward to this year.
