POMONA,CA- The Indian Healthy Food Competition was held at the Human Nutrition and Food Science Department at CalPoly Pomona. Dr. Harmit Singh, Professor and Chair of Nutrition and Food Science Department at CalPoly Pomona had this idea for last two years. Four teams from the greater LA area participated in the competition. The teams were judged for best tasting, best health benefits and best diet analysis.
It was a first of its kind competition with about 70 people in attendance. The judges were, KumKum Sinha, dietician; Geeta Arora, dietician; Harvinder Kaur, Sethi; owner of Curry Bistro restaurant in Diamond Bar; and Dr. Gabriel Davidov, Professor of Food Science and Technology at CalPoly Pomona. Professor David Edens with his team of students cooked some Indian dishes for everyone attending. The teams cooked for two hours and the flavor of Indian spices and music was all over the place. Judges tasted the dishes and asked questions about them to the team members.
Rajesh Singh, Arif Golwala and Devesh Kumar made a ‘Kathi roll’ which won the prize for best taste; Shikha Arora, Bobby Mehra and Parvinder Singh made the ‘Dalia Pulao’ and won the best health benefits Prize and Shobha and her team won the best diet analysis category. Atul Kandhari and Rajesh Chohan were not far behind and made Chinese long beans with paneer.
Harmit Singh thanked Dr. Lisa Kessler, Dean College of Agriculture, Dr. David Edens, Melissa Watkins, Kelly Pina and Donna Ha for helping organize the event. Attendees were able to taste and enjoy the food from all the teams and received a pepper and basil plant from the CalPoly farm store as a gift. In future Harmit Singh aims at conducting more workshops.
