TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) Southern Califonia’s signature annual conference which started early in the morning was an almost all day long event which included numerous speeches, panels of discussion, with the chance for networking, a trade of ideas and attaining valuable advice.
After a breakfast of ‘chai’ and ‘parathas’, the conference kicked off in the Grand Ballroom with Neeraj Bhavani, Co-Chair and incoming president of TiE SoCal for 2017, taking the stage to give the audience some background information about TiE. “TiE was founded in 1992 in Silicon Valley with the mission to foster entrepreneurship. members, 2,500 charter members. TiE alone has generated more than $200 billion in wealth and many TiE members are active in social entrepreneurship and giving back to the community like Akshay Patra foundation and many others,” said Bhavani.
He continued to speak about new and upcoming TiE SoCal programs, the TiE SoCal Labs and New Charter Member Workshop Series. Bhavani concluded by introducing his Co-Chair, Hemant Warudkar.
Warudkar gave the audience a brief summary of the conference program for the day. Emcee for the conference, Indian American comedian, Rajiv Satyal, then took over, making an entrance after his “I am Indian” video had finished playing.
Post a few of Satyal’s jokes came time for the first speaker of the day. Ashu Garg, General Partner at Foundation Capital , spoke about “The Decade of The CMO,” focusing on how the role of the Chief Marketing Officer has changed over the years and how with new technology this position has been revamped.“Lives are changed by serendipitous moments,” said Garg.
Satyal then introduced the next speaker, Gopi Kallayil, Chief Evangelist and Brand Marketing Guru from Google. Kallayil who was to speak on “The Internet of The Inner Net” made a last minute change and spoke instead on “Brand Marketing in The Age of Digital.” He spoke about a variety of things including commercials and how they should attract and interest the viewer.“It needs to be personalized, evoke a feeling, be entertaining and engaging,” said Kallayil about how to make a successful advertisement.
Harina Kapoor, President of TiE SoCal, then introducing Manu Shah, CEO and founder of M. S. International described him as the epitome of a man who took a simple idea seriously and created a name for himself. Shah spoke on the topic ‘Ethics in Business.’
