were honored for their public interest work and promoting the South Asian legal community. Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell a federal judge in the Central District of California, was given the Judicial Appreciation Award for her work promoting diversity on the bench. She pioneered a series of lunches with high school students while at the state court in Norwalk, bringing in diverse students to the courthouse to familiarize them to the judicial system.
Suma Mathai whose award was accepted by her husband was given the Public Interest Award for her previous work at the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice, where she provided legal assistance to poor and indigent South Asian clients, primarily women seeking family law assistance to escape from abusers.
The Trailblazer Award was given to Dean Sujit Choudhry, who is the first South Asian Dean of a major law school, and is internationally known for his academic work in the field of comparative constitutional law, including Indian constitutional law.
