Migration Program (LAMP). The star of the evening was Sunita, a LAMP Student who came from Gujarat to attend the event. Sunita, an 18 year old, belongs to the very backward Koli community of Kutch in Gujarat. The Kolis are known for their extremely low literacy levels and for not sending their girls to school. Large numbers of this community migrate to the salt pans for eight months every year to make a meager living. Sunita used to migrate with her parents since she was a 6-month old baby and continued to do so until she was 12 years old. She was able to go to school only four months in a year. Then LAMP intervened in her desperate circumstances and Sunita was brought to the seasonal hostel in 2006 by Cohesion Foundation Trust (CFT), supported by AIF. Sunita started enjoying school and doing well. Math and Science became her favorite subjects. Her favorite activity was reading library books. It didn’t take very long for Sunita’s life to transform after that. She passed her 12th with distinction. This year, with the support of Cohesion and AIF she has got admission in Tolani Commerce College and stays at Tolani Girls Hostel, Adipur, studying for a Bachelor’ degree in commerce. She aspires to become a Chartered Accountant.
