LOS ANGELES, CA - Sonu Nigam enchanted thousands of his fans at his concert “Klose to my Soul-2014” at the Nokia Theater, L.A. Live on May 31 hosted by Sankara Eye Foundation. Bollywood singer and living legend made the crowds sway to his tunes throughout the evening. Nigam, truly a versatile singer,
made his fans laugh, cry and kept them entertained, with never a dull moment. It was truly a magical experience. The show started off with Jonita Gandhi from Toronto, Canada of “Chennai Express” and “Highway” fame belting out yesteryear songs like “Raat Akeli Hai” from the movie ‘Jewel Thief’ and the famous “Monica O my darling” from the movie ‘Caravan’.
Nigam made a grand entry and kicked off the evening with old hits. He continued with his pop album songs like “Deewana” and even played the harmonica himself which took the listeners’ breath away. Nigam, very humbly, introduced his musicians to the audiences after every few songs and encouraged applause for them. He informed the audience that every member of his music troop had mastered a musical instruments since childhood. Nigam also danced and did the moonwalk brilliantly. The most interesting part of the evening was that he educated the audiences on how a song was really made. He explained that first a lyricist writes the words of a song, following which the music is composed, musicians then practice the tune, which is finally followed by the singer who comes to rehearse the song along with the music. He demonstrated the whole process and made it funny and entertaining. He went to sing “Maahi Ve” from ‘Kal ho Na Ho’ which brought the audience to their feet, dancing and enjoying themselves. He also sang “Dil le ja le ja” from the movie ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi’ Gum singing in a male and female voice. He went on to sing his popular song “Bijuriya” from his pop album debut days that he mentioned as his all-time favorite that he performs at all his concerts. During the break Sankara Eye Foundation’s chairman Murli Krishnamurthy spoke to the audience on organizing the “Klose to my Soul-2014” concerts at Los Angeles, San Jose and Seattle. Krishnamurthy further announced that the Foundation for the next three years aimed at raising $15 million to start a new eye hospitals in India. Sankara Eye Foundation is a non-profit organization that initiates and drives community eye care activities in India by working with their partner, Sankara Eye Care Institutions, India which operates and manages eight eye care hospitals all over India.
Nigam’s father Agam Kumar Nigam continued the evening by singing melodious tracks. Sonu also sang “Kya hua tera vaada” from the movie ‘Hum Kisise se Kam Nahin’ originally sung by Sonu’s idol Mohammed Rafi and told the audiences that this was the first song he sang as a child artist on stage in 1977 so this song was close to his heart. He ended the show with the song “Kal ho na Ho”. Sonu also reminisced about his mother in this song who was a great singer herself but passed away in February 2013. The audiences got teary eyed seeing pictures and video of him with his mother. Nigam was quick to change the mood of the crowd by singing the famous “Abhi mujhme kahin” from the movie ‘Agneepath’ which was like the cherry on the cake.
