from 8.30 a.m. to 12 noon at the Sanatan Dharma Temple where many seniors, youth and children were seen actively taking part in yoga sessions conducted by experienced yoga teachers. Senior Yoga instructors led programs at the Sanatan Dharma Temple.Among them were Sai K. Pratap and Lali Venkat; Hema Raja and Raghunathan Sarangapani;Dr. Sailaja Reddy; Jeyshree Sridhar and Durga Tadipathy; Chakrapani Kallur; Anjana and Hiren Rajput; Vijaya Kavuri,Dr. Savitri Rambatla;Padma Chode, Niranjan Bhatt, Lou Treotola, Mansukh Kaneria, Kruthi Gandhi, Jayshree Mehta.
During the Norwalk event children put on a spectacular show demonstrating their yoga skills and left many an adult awe struck on the ability of how one’s limbs could be maneuvered when properly trained.
“Like I am sure it was for all of us, it is hard to put the picture of those 11 sweet kids out of the mind! How sweetly they accepted the grass as their stage and handled the little pebbles, and mounds of earth beneath their mats, and yet maintained their poise and balance,” said Lalli Venkat, VYRF Senior Instructor and Team Leader for VYRF’s International Day of Yoga festivities.
The program in Irvine was held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mike Ward Community Park where visitors were seen browsing through stalls that displayed yoga related material – from literature, music to lessons.
VYRF held many yoga sessions during the Irvine event. Popularly known as ‘VYASA-LA’, the Foundation is a chapter of the renowned SVYASA — University in Bengaluru, India, founded by Dr H. R. Nagendra under whose advisement, VYRF USA was formed by B. U. Patel, Babubhai Gandhi and K. V. Chakrapani in 2002.
Asked about the goal of the Vivekananda Yoga Research Foundation, an official said: “We strive to take the vision of the great master Swami Vivekananda for humankind forward, with the clear objective of making readily available the benefits of yoga to everyone and making yoga a socially relevant science, by focusing on research using contemporary scientific methods.”
He said benefits of yoga research included: “To give modern validation to what the ancient masters already knew; unravel the hidden mysteries of yoga, and allow the practical application of yoga principles and techniques to life.”
He said the Foundation will continue modern scientific validation of yoga by conducting clinical trials in collaboration with hospitals and scientific organizations, set up Distance Education Programs for B.S, M.S., and doctoral candidates, establish an in- house yoga wellness center, work toward integrating alternative methods and modern science for health and happiness by creating a happy union between yoga, ayurveda and allopathy.
The instructors present at the event included - Manu Swamy; Padma Chode; Anjana and Hiren Rajput; Chakrapani Kallur; Lali Venkat; Babubai Gandhi and Mohan Kumar. The VYRF booth was manned by Dr. Gowri Selvan (project scientist and biology faculty, who is also a VYRF instructor), VYRF Instructors-in-training Vijaya Kulkarni and Preethi Selvan, and long time volunteer Nalini Didi, were also present. The Irvine event concluded with a Surya Namaskar.
