tempo down with “Chithi Na Koi Sandesh”, a beautiful song by Jagjit Singh, from the movie “Dushman”. This slow classic piece did not deter the mood of the audience, though, as four dancers joined Gagan for his next electrifying performance.
The 13-year-old Gagan, who was fondly called “3G” on the Zee TV talent show, constantly won accolades for his performances not only from judges but also from the audience, who voted in large numbers for him. He walked away as the winner of Season 5 in March this year with a coveted trophy and keys to new car.
Gagan made way to another “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs” Season 5 sensation, Arunita Kanjilal. Although Arunita was placed fourth in the overall competition, she won the ‘Best Performer of the Series’ title for her consistently top performances.
Arunita, who hails from Kolkatta, captivated the audience with her rendition of ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’. Lyrics by Pandit Narendra Sharma and originally sung by the evergreen Lata Mangeshkar from the same titled movie, this song has remained as one of the all time classic movie theme songs. As Arunita performed the song, visuals of an early morning fog, sans Zeenat Aman, was displayed on a large screen, refreshing memories of many a fan of this 1978 movie. Arunita had the audience spellbound with her voice as she skillfully executed the song.
Next on stage was the performer all had been waiting for. The packed Terrace Theater erupted in applause as Shaan took to the stage with four dancers. Born as Shantanu Mukherjee in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh to a family of musicians – father a music director named Manash Mukherjee and grandfather a well-known lyricist named Jahar Mukherjee, Shaan is a playback singer more active in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Urdu, Telugu and Kannada films and a television host.
Shaan is also a judge of Zee TV’s “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs” talent show. He has sung many Pakistani songs and is considered one of the most popular voices for romantic songs. He has different genres such as pop, patriotic, jazz, ghazals, hip-hop, rock, and many more as his forte. He has sung in Kannada, Bengali, Punjabi, Nepali, English, Hindi, Oriya, Malayalam, Telugu and Marathi. Shaan has been showered with titles such as “Golden Voice of India”, “Voice of Paradise”, “Magician of Melody”, and “Voice of Youth”. Shaan opened with ‘Main Hoon Don’, the theme song from the 2006 Shah Ruk Khan thriller ‘Don’. The music and tempo of this song got many in the auditorium to their feet.
He performed “Main Aisa Kyun Hoon” from the 2004 Hrithik Roshan movie “Lakshya”, which has been lauded by critics and listeners alike. “The superbly arranged hip-hop tune is one hell of a catchy number,” noted a Rediff music review. Bollywood Hungama in its year-end music report, described the song as “an experiment succeeding big time.”
“Do U Wanna Partner” from the Salman Khan and Govinda comedy/romance “Partner” and the crowd favorite “Chand Sifarish” from “Fanaa” got the audience on their feet. Shaan bagged a quadruple of Best Male Playback awards in 2007 – Bollywood Movie Awards, Star Screen Awards, Filmfare Awards and International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards – for “Chand Sifarish”.
Shaan also performed some of his chart busters such as “Rock-n-Roll Soniye” from the 2006 musical-romantic film “Khabi Alveda Na Kehna”, “Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe” from the 2001 comedy-drama film “Dil Chahta Hai”, and “Deewangi Deewangi” from the 2007 Shah Ruk Khan romantic-thriller “Om Shanti Om”.
