and locations for a chance to socialize and network every year. It is all about creating and producing new ideas to advance the concepts of engineering as well as assisting the next generation of engineers to figure out their place in the industry.
ASEI is an organization of engineers and technical professionals of Indian origin which was started by Hari Bindal in Detroit, Michigan in 1983. ASEI endeavors to continually support an Indo-American relationship, establish a communication method between technical organizations all around the US and other locations, assist in charitable organizations and facilitate students at multiple levels as well as arrange and coordinate networking events.
In order to achieve these goals the ASEI holds conventions in different locations. During these conventions there are keynote speakers and various discussion panels for attendees to break into groups to attend the subject they are most interested in to gain more perspective.
The topics for this year were Infrastructure and Utilities; Information Technology; Life Sciences and Health Technology and Emerging Trends in Engineering. Additionally, later there were student mock interviews to assist the students who are about to enter the industry to be better prepared. The highlight of the event was the Awards Banquet in the evening featuring powerful keynote speakers and entertainment. The banquet started off with the national anthems of both the US and India.
Then came time for Sam Pitroda,Telecom Revolutionary and Chairman C-SAM the first of two keynote speakers of the evening. Pitroda seemed to have one overall message which he attempted to convey to the audience then he continued by talking about his life’s journey. “The time has come for us to solve the problems of the poor in the United States and in India,” said Pitroda as his main point. As he spoke and joked during his speech the audience laughed and were thoroughly entertained. Pitroda concluded by making a very good point. “Dreaming big is very important in life,” said Pitroda.
Then the second keynote speaker of the evening, B. V. Jagadeesh, made a few interesting points speaking about how people should view their careers.“Do not work towards money only,” said Jagadeesh.
Then he continued by talking about what individuals should do once they have become successful.“People should come back to mentor the next generation,” said Jagadeesh. Manu Shah, of MSI came on stage to say a few words. He spoke briefly about the achievements of Indian- Americans.“Given the opportunity to rise in America, Indians will go above and beyond,” said Shah.
Awards were then handed out. All of the speakers received awards, so did individuals from businesses, as well as a few engineering students. The evening came to an end with dinner being served. Dan Nainan, comedian, as well as Karmagraphy dance troupe took turns to entertain the audience as they ate a delicious dinner.
