CERRITOS, CA - “Love heals”, “I am at peace”, “Making someone smile is better than putting an effort to make yourself smile”, were some of the inspiration messages that community members planted a field of paper flowers with, at SAHARA’s Walk for Community Empowerment, which was held on June 22,

at the Cerritos Regional Community Park, here. Over 300 participants enjoyed the fun-filled event while also learning about the services made available by the South Asian Helpline And Referral Agency and resources accessible at partner agencies. The walk also promoted a healthy lifestyle and stress reduction. Darshini Aithal led attendees through a yoga session accompanied by soothing music in the serene park setting. A Bollywood aerobics session led by the DEVIS (Dancing, Exercising, Volunteering, Inspiring Sahelis) energized the group as high-fives and cheers filled the air. It seemed as if a high-spirited Bollywood flash mob had taken over the park.
City of Artesia Mayor Pro Tem Miguel Canales and Councilmember Ali Taj recognized SAHARA for the difference it continues to make in the community before cutting the ribbon to start the lakeside walk. SAHARA Board President Reshma Block and Vice President Sona Shah shared information on services including counseling, advocacy, rehabilitation, and education tailored to the needs of victims of domestic violence; as well as public and health benefits enrollment assistance, citizenship assistance, emotional well-being support, senior services, and computer and English classes for community members.
Jubilant children delighted in face painting, henna tattoos, T-shirt art, water balloon races, and many other activities. Smiles and laughter filled the crowd as senior citizens joined the children for a rousing game of Bingo. The walk ended with cheer as over 30 prizes, including outfits donated by Xarposh Boutique of Diamond Bar, were gifted to raffle winners.
