LOS ANGELES,CA-Indian-American Rajeev Ram celebrated his 33rd birthday Mar 18 as the lone American still playing this weekend at the BNP Paribas Open. He and doubles partner South African Raven Klaasen used some of that birthday mojo to surge back after trailing a set in their evening match to claim the 2017 BNP Paribas Open men’s doubles title. The victory over Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo was the first Indian Wells title for...
both players. It almost didn’t happen. “It’s so close when we play these guys,” Ram said. “We got them today, but they are just as deserving.”
“The atmosphere at the end there was something special,” Klaasen said. “We really enjoyed that.” The pair finished the job in a tight third set, by winning four of the last six games. It was Ram and Klaasen’s fifth title together, and second of 2017. They won at Delray Beach earlier this year. This was by far their biggest tournament title, though. And they had to beat a number of teams with some of the top singles players in the world to do it. “It’s a birthday I’m definitely going to remember,”Ram said.
