BREA, CA – EducateAKid Scholarship program, a charity initiative by Organization of Hindu Malayalees (OHM), had their 10th anniversary Celebration and Annual Banquet on November 7 at Shenai Cuisine of India here, which was attended by hundreds and raised $45K. EducateAKid is a scholarship program designed...
to help underprivileged young men and women who have entered higher learning institutions in India. The program has helped 375 students till date and has raised $230000 in the last decade.
The board members along with the sponsors started the evening with the lamp lighting ceremony and a prayer. Chris Alexander, renowned motivational speaker and author of ‘The ‘wow’ Factor’ took the stage and spoke about the importance of giving. He summed it up beautifully with the famous quote -”fragrance remains in the hand of the giver”, urging everyone to contribute to this cause.
Dr Unni Krishnan, Dean of College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) at California State University, Fullerton introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. R. Narayanaswami.
Dr Narayanswami before beginning his keynote speech expressed gratitude to his teacher Dr Srinivas Iyer,who was seated in the audience.He made a three point speech about excellence,education and gifting.He said that amongst all the riches, education is the biggest wealth. And explained that from Karl Marx to the Vedic Rishis, everyone has stressed on the glory of giving.He added that it is only people who have who can give to those in need.
Sajan Pillai, CEO of UST Global, and a supporter of this scholarship program ever since its inception, said that UST has hired many students from this program and even pointed to a few in the audience.He also played a small video on the work that UST is doing in the field of education.
Aishwarya and Gayatri, the emcees of the evening read out the feedback of students with real life examples of how such assistance to deserving financially challenged students made a world of difference to them and their families. They also kept the audience entertained by reading out ‘favorite college memories’ written by various members of the audience.
Sanjaye Elayattu,OHM Board Director thanked everyone including sponsors and donors for attending, and for helping some very deserving students in their quest for higher education. He praised the vision and dedication of all those who created and supported the program over the years.The evening concluded with the board members presenting plaques and shawls to the sponsors followed by dinner and entertainment by Indie Beatz.
