U.S State Department. He also appealed for support to increase the Society’s trust fund from the current level of $520,000 to a million dollars. There were positive responses from the attendees. The Society recognizes outstanding high school graduates in San Diego County irrespective of national origin and the annual lecture is perhaps the longest running event to provide opportunities for students to evaluate Gandhiji’s contribution to humankind in the form of essays.
Besides Gandhi scholarships, it also supports students from families with no college education known as AVID scholarships.
Prof Ramesh Rao, Director of Qualcomm Institute, where the event was held, and Chair of the Gandhi Scholarship Committee presented awards to the 2016 Mahatma Gandhi scholars and essay readers.
Sabodh Garg, Co-chair of AVID scholarship committee presented the AVID scholars and emphasized their unique backgrounds and scholastic achievements. An outstanding graduate of Foothills Christian High School, speech impaired Daniel “Riley” Hart, an adoptee from Romania, was given a standing ovation for a very moving personal essay written by him and read out by his mother.
Another outstanding student from Cathedral Catholic High School read her, much appreciated essay on non-violence.
The Mahatma Gandhi Scholars are: Monica Angeles (Rancho Buena Vista High School); Aliasgar Badani (Mount Carmel High School); Pooja Bisarya (Torrey Pines High School); Alyssa Connolly (Cathedral Catholic High School) ; Grace Donalson (High Tech High); Daniel “Riley” Hart (Foothills Christian); Nithin Krishnamurthi (Torrey Pines High School); Samiksha Ramesh (Carlsbad High School); Liliana Ramirez (Mission Hills High School); Maya Rao (Torrey Pines High School); Zohra Sahial (Escondido High School); Gokul Swamy (Del Norte High School); VibhaVijayakumar (San Marcos High School). The AVID Scholars are: Jennifer Bui (Hoover High School); Barnabe Camacho Ventura (Mission Vista High School); Mirella Cruz Trinidad (Hoover High School); Jesus Perez Casteneda (Serra High School); Erika Vdenegas (Montgomery High School). During the last 33 years, the Society has recognized and supported collegiate education of over 600 students receiving cash awards up to $2,000 each and AVID scholars receiving up to $8,000 beginning this year. Besides the cash awards of about $55,000 this year, 18 students also received US Congressional and California State certificates from the San Diego Congressional delegation and state delegations. The event was followed by a reception. Later,a dinner was held in honor of Biswal at the home of Shital and Manish Parikh
