set by South Africa in April 2015 which stands at 3377 square meters. Led by Subashri Natarajan, who has been crocheting since the tender age of 10, the team of females has given themselves the name “Mother India’s Crochet Queens.” The group consists of nearly 1000 participants from various locations around the world. The participants range from the youngest at 8 years old to the eldest being 85 years of age. ‘The Mother India’s Crochet Queens’ team is looking for more Indian women who know how to crochet to join them to work together to achieve their goal. The current participants are from various areas around the world. The locations are all around India, the USA, Europe, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Singapore, and Malaysia, said the overseas coordinator, Ruba Murali, based in Glendale.
At this time, there are only 17 members participating from the US. Murali aspires to recruit more individuals to assist in breaking the Guinness record. In order to keep in touch with one another, WhatsApp chat groups were created based on location for the participants to be able to communicate amongst themselves. Additionally, a Facebook page was made under the team’s name to inspire Indian women who have a passion for crochet and have the desire to “put India on the international map.”“This group is formed with a great mission to break the Guinness record for the largest crochet blanket from India. The blankets will be donated to needy people after the achievement,” was mentioned on the Facebook page. The finale event will be held in Chennai, India on January 26, 2016 where Guinness officials will come from London to India to measure the blanket and hopefully give the ‘Mother India’s Crochet Queens’ the honor of holding the title of “World’s Largest Crochet Blanket by a Participating Group.” For more information contact Ruba Murali at (818) 814-7457.
