SAN GABRIEL, CA - Crazy, exciting, and madness are mere terms in a dictionary but these adjectives do not even come close to describing the electrifying, heart-racing, mesmerizing, and unforgettable experience that was the “Swag” tour performed by Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani,
better known around the world as Vishal-Shekhar. The concert lit up the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse on July 29 with hundreds in attendance. “Dekho dekho hain shaam badi deewani, dheere dheere ban jaye na koi kahaani, … all the hot girls put your hands up and say om shanti om … all the cool boys come on and make some noise and say om shanti om,” are lyrics from Deewangi Deewangi. Vishal and Shekhar did not even need to complete one verse from this song to get audience members cheering, screaming, and best of all on their feet dancing to this fast-paced track from Om Shanti Om. All of the hot girls and all of the cool boys in attendance happily obliged to the command of the lyrics which were presented by the duo, by putting their hands in the air, making some noise and singing Om Shanti Om.
Deewangi Deewangi was the first song the dynamic duo sang as they came on stage after being introduced by master of ceremonies, Rehan Siddiqui. “Look this evening will be crazy, slowly stories will be made,” is the English translation of the lyrics above. This song perfectly epitomizes the objective of the Vishal-Shekhar concert because the evening was crazy and stories were definitely made.
All of this was made possible by national promoter Bright Brain Production and local promoter Urop’s Media & Entertainment by Urop Soni and Priti Patel.
Keeping the momentum without wasting time, they continued with their set. A mashup of two songs, Disco Deewane and Ishq Wala Love, from the same movie, Student of the Year, which garnered much enthusiasm from the crowd.
Shekhar knowing the hook steps to the songs performed by them in addition to singing the song. Vishal, however, jumped up and down on stage dancing vivaciously.
In an attempt to have more of an audience interaction, Vishal asked everyone to sing along to the following track, Tu Meri, from Bang Bang!. Everyone in attendance gladly did so by singing along, especially when Shekhar pointed his microphone toward the audience.
The excitement that filled the air during the title track from Ranbir Kapoor’s Bachna Ae Haseeno and Dard E Disco from Om Shanti Om could not be contained. Fans demonstrated their love by running near the stage to dance, and others just stood at their seats and danced. Vishal then told the audience that Shekhar was going to do something special, a recent addition to their concert tours. Shekhar then sat down at the piano to perform and sing songs from yesteryears which he loved and which have been an inspiration to him. Shekhar started with Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar and continued with Tera Bina Zindagi Se Koi. Both of these melodious numbers had the audience members singing along as best as they could. Shekhar gave a shout out to all of his fellow band mates during Jo Bheji Thi Dua. Maintaining the vibe, Shekhar continued his blast from the past by singing Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko. During this song, audience members took out their cell phones, turned on their flashlights, and turned it towards Shekhar who had requested everyone to do so. Vishal taking his turn at solo performances began his set with Tune Maari Entriyaan. Vishal brought the audience back to its enthusiastic mood with fans singing and dancing.
Dhoom Again and Dhan Te Nan were more high energy and fast paced songs that did not let the audience take a break from doing anything other than cheering, dancing, and screaming.
Before singing the next song, Vishal taught the audience the Mumbai booty dance which jelled well with Malhari, a song from Bajirao Mastani. “We are just getting started, do not sit down,” said Vishal to the audience.
Gulaabo continued the momentum of energetic songs to keep everyone on their feet.
Then the mood switched. Once the opening music began for the “bhajan,” audiences screamed in extreme excitement that they could not contain themselves. The song that acquired the most love of the night was Balam Pichkari from the movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. At this point, Vishal told the audiences it is time to have Shekhar come back on stage but in order for that to happen everyone has to chant his name . The audience cheerfully chanted, “Shekhar, Shekhar, Shekhar!”
Back together again, the duo sang Nashe Se Chadh Gayi amidst screams, cheers, and dancing. Taking the time, Vishal-Shekhar sang a few old and new romantic numbers. Dil Diyan Gallan reaped the most affection from all of the romantic tracks.
The lighting and sounds were exquisitely synchronized to match the ambiance of all the songs.
Swag Se Swagat was the following track that brought back the upbeat, fast-paced, and liveliness momentum. Radha, Baby Ko Bass, and Sheila Ki Jawani were some of the songs performed in the same animated manner to captivate fans.
Chamak Challo the grand finale, brought the exhilarating concert to an end.
“Thank you and good night,” said Shekhar to the audience as the two walked off the stage.
