with much fanfare. After day-long festivities, the night turned nostalgic with Kumar Sanu evoking endless memories of the past with his live concert. During the 3-hour long show, Sanu rendered some of his most memorable Bollywood tunes of the 80s and 90s to a packed house of 1,453 people. Emcees Poly and Rupak Chatterjee brought in Swagata Nag Sarkar, who performs with Sanu globally; she enthralled the audience with her angelic voice while they anticipated the King of Melody.
Sanu made a grand entry and was dubbed the ‘Royal Bengal Tiger’ with 35,000 songs and five consecutive Filmfare awards under his belt in his 27-year long career. Kedarnath Bhattacharya, aka Kumar Sanu, also holds a world record for recording 28 songs, the most in one day, in 1993. Interestingly, March 31 is observed as Kumar Sanu Day in US.
The legendary singer, dressed in white and a glittering blue sequined jacket, greeting the audience, told them that he has sung so many songs in his career that the whole night will not be enough to cover them all. He then proceeded to sing snippets of his chartbuster songs to thunderous applause, including favorites such as “Tere Dar Pe Sanam Chale Aaye”, “Do Dil Mil Rahe Hai Magar Chup Ke”, “Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen”, “Dheere Dheere Se Dil Ko Churana”, and “Jab Koi Baat Bigad Jaaye,” interacting with the audience in between with humorous comments and stories in Bengali.
Sharing an anecdote before singing the melodious “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga”, he mentioned how RD Burman admonished him to shave and dress properly before recording the romantic song. And, it was only when he returned ‘dressed properly’ that the song was recorded. He also detailed about how the word ‘jaise’ was used differently in the song every time on the instructions of the legendary director, which he eagerly demonstrated to the delight of the audience.
The versatile singer sang a number of hit songs like “Chura Ke Dil Mera”, “Tujhe Dekha Toh Jaana Sanam”, “Sochenge Tumhe Pyaar Kare Ki Nahin”, “Ek Sanam Chahiye Aashiqui Ke Liye” that brought the audience to its feet.
Sanu’s daughter, Shannon K., took to the stage and rendered Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” followed by “Pretty Eyes,” displaying her inherited talent at such a young age. Like her father she is also looking forward to rise high in the world of music – in Hollywood. At the end of concert, Sanu and his co-singer Swagata Nag Sarkar were felicitated by Dakshini grand sponsor Dr. Kali Pradip Chaudhury, who was in turn recognized for his contribution and support.
It would not be wrong to say that the evening left LA residents yearning for more. In fact the electrifying musical extravaganza drew music lovers from not only the Indian American community, but from the larger South Asian diaspora as well.
There were shops set outside theater offering mouth-watering treats, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.
