LONG BEACH, CA - An evening bursting with reminiscing the magic of hits from the 80s, 90s, 2000s, and even some more recent popular tracks, was hosted by StagePaint Productions who brought Kumar Sanu and AlkaYagnik live in concert to Southern California at the Terrace Theater here on May 13.
They took their fans through a nostalgic journey filled with flashbacks of the music of yester years.
The two energetic and vibrant artists took their turn on the stage to sing a variety of their hits accompanied with a symphony orchestra. First they sang separately; then the dynamic duo sang together. On their own the singers were entertaining and charismatic but when they came together, they ignited their microphones and set the stage on fire.
Kumar Sanu, the 2009 Padma Shri award recipient, opened the show. Walking on stage after the musical introduction of “Do Dil Mil Rahe Hai,” Sanu came on stage and lit a spark as he sang this popular number from `Pardes.’ Fans who could no longer contain themselves started cheering loudly. After the first song, Sanu took time to share an interesting fact with his fans. “The more you whistle, the more we will sing,” said Sanu as a way to ensure the audience participation..
Continuing his set list, Sanu sang “Bus Ek Sanam Chaahiye” from `Aashiqui ‘ which got the audience cheering, screaming, and whistling with just the opening beats. The audience did not even need the lyrics to recognize the song that was coming their way. Another song from the same album which garnered the same love and affection was “Dheere Dheere Se.”
Maintaining his pace and singing more of his hits , Sanu sang “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To” from `1942: A Love Story.’ With this song came the story of how Sanu originally got the opportunity to sing this song for the film and how the song came to be. This song got the audience clapping along to the beat.
“Sambhala Hai Maine” from the movie `Naaraaz’ was the next song Sanu sang which garnered high praise from the audience through screams, cheers, and whistles.
Drinking water in between when necessary Sanu continued singing even with his high temperature fever.“The show must go on,” said Sanu. Changing up the mood of the evening, the next song presented was a faster paced track raising the excitement level. “Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein” was the last song Sanu sang with high appreciation from the audience prior to taking a break. This hit from `Baazigar’ got loud cheers and claps. Additionally, this song got the audience to either dance in their seats or stand up and dance. AlkaYagnik, Queen of Melody, came on stage with the introductory music of the title song of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ being played and those in attendance immediately recognized the music and went wild, cheering, whistling and clapping. Yagnik came on stage singing the lyrics to this song. Then she continued her set song list by requesting everyone wearing the color of her next song to stand up and dance. “Laal Dupatta” was the next song of choice to which everyone in red happily obliged her request to dance.
“Raah Mein Unse Mulaqat,” one of Yagnik’s personal favorites, “Tip Tip Barsa Pani,” and “Gali Mein Aaj Chaand Nikhla” were the next numbers on the list which made her fans go wild with appreciation.
Taking this chance, Yagnik sang a medley of some of her hit tracks. From this assortment of songs “Dekha Hai Pehli Baar,” “Chhama Chhama,” “Taal Se Taal,” “Poocho Zara Poocho,” and “Ek Do Teen” were the ones which reaped the most love and gratitude from her fans.
