were present to mark India’s 68th year of Independence. After the social hour, the evening officially began with the lamp lighting ceremony with officials of the Lions Club, FICSC along with Nilesh Shah from the US Consulate; Tony Lima, Mayor of Artesia; Harry Sidhu, ex-mayor of Anaheim and Prakash Narain, ex-mayor of Cypress participating. Miss India Southern California 2012, Priyadarshini Roy sang the US and Indian national anthems.
President of FICSC, Raj Walia addressed the issues of trash bins overflowing in ‘Little India’ on Pioneer Blvd in Artesia and requested Tony Lima to do something about the situation. He mentioned that he does not want Indians to be categorized as dirty, so getting the trash picked up on the weekends may help keep the city clean. Lions Club Chairman Dilip Butani thanked everyone on behalf of his organization. President of the club Maninder Sethi, in his speech said that the members want to do seva for the Indian American community. Tony Lima took the stage and spoke about some relevant issues concerning the Indian-American community like the new train station coming up in Artesia and widening of the sidewalks. Prakash Narain said one should feel really proud of their Indian heritage and should look forward to the future filled with hope under the new leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Harry Sidhu who is currently serving on the Board of the Orange County Water District, spoke about the California drought and urged everyone to conserve water.
Lima, Sidhu and Narain recognized the members of FICSC and Lion’s Club for their effort. They also recognized Woo Young Shoung, District manager BBCN Bank and KV Kumar, Chairman of Indo- American Republic party. Entrepreneur Sunil Tolani and Nilesh Shah were also acknowledged for their contribution to the community. Tolani in his speech attributed his success to his Indian values and upbringing while Nilesh Shah focused his speech on strengthening Indo American relations.
Young Kim, running for State Assembly spoke about her desire to be a public servant and her special association with the Indian American community The cultural program was organized by Sumeeta Singh. Veena Singh performed some patriotic songs which were followed by cultural dances. Emcees for the event were John Sethi, Sakshi Walia and Ajay Shanmugham. The night concluded with a scrumptious dinner.
