BUENA PARK,CA-An evening of “fun filled humor, laughter, and heartwarming recitals was delivered as promised by the Indo American Senior Heritage (IASH) group on August 8 at the Jain Center here. Hasya Kavi Sammelan was the event of the night that brought two comedians and one poet/singer to the...
US and Canada. IASH proudly presented those three extremely talented kavis from India for the audience’s entertainment. The kavis were Sardar Manjit Singh, Dr. Anu Sapan, and Ras Bihari Gaur They filled the evening with an assortment of jokes, satires, geets, and ghazals. The topics of the jokes were mainly wives,husbands, cooking, make-up, exercise, and neighbors. Additionally, these were jokes on the current trends and happenings in the world, for example,the internet, texting, and WhatsApp.
Singh told multiple jokes about the husband-wife relationship and to balance out the jokes, he complimented wives saying,”Wives make houses homes by making the silent walls and ceilings talk.”
In an attempt to further lighten the mood and to keep the women happy,Gaur said.
“Wives, although we fight with them, they are our support system and we could never separate from them.”
Audience members laughed and laughed throughout the evening. The poets drew a lot of applause too.
The overall theme of the night was that life should be worry free. It is too short to waste on aspects we have no control over and there is no need to be so stressed.
“If you are carefree then there is fun everywhere,” said Gaur after one of his many jokes.
Every joke was presented from memory.None of the three used devices to help them.
Dr. Sapan presented poems and ghazals about love saying love is an important and very powerful emotional is the most beautiful thing in the world.”
The performers took turns to present their jokes and there were multiple times that they interacted with each other. They also build on one another’s material to maintain a sense of flow amongst the variety of subjects.
All three have a variety of works to their names.Singh has written six books and has two CDs Gaur has written three books and has one CD,while Dr. Sapan has written one book and an has audio album.
Having made eight previous trips to the US and three to Canada,Singh was very familiar with the local audience here compared to Gaur and Dr. Sapan. Gaur has made just one trip to the US previously and will be visiting Canada for the first time.Dr. Sapan is making her first appearance in both the US and Canada.
Prior to taking a break, the board took a moment to present the three performers with shawls. Mr. and Mrs. Aggarwal, one of the biggest donors to IASH, presented a shawl to Singh, some women members presented a shawl to Dr. Sapan, while Jagdish Purohit, President of IASH, and Ram Singhania, Vice President of IASH, bestowed a shawl on Gaur.
Singh concluded the show by thanking the audience and told them that since they clapped whole heartedly for them they should once again clap whole heartedly but this time for themselves. This was because everyone sat for nearly four hours without moving and giving the performers, who are not stars, their entire attention for the evening.
