Physicians of Indian Origin. The innovative choreographic work by Vijayalakshmi, was inspired by poet Sudeep Sen’s critically acclaimed book of poetry, ‘Rain’.
Vijayalakshmi interpreted the myriad moods of rain. For the original music Vijayalakshmi worked closely with Los Angles based Emmy and Grammy nominated music composer Mac Quayle to arrange traditional Kerala rhythms, with Carnatic, Dhrupad, Rabindra Sangeet and contemporary world music. This vision was furthered by her collaboration with artistic director, Sara Baur-Harding.
The evening’s program opened with a santoor recital by the talented duo of Kamaljeet Ahluwalia, accompanied by her husband Jas Ahluwalia on the table.
Vijayalakshmi, founder and artistic director of the Mohiniyattam Institute said, “ I am so overwhelmed with the turnout and response from the audience. These Classical traditions are not just archaic symbols, but hold a significant relevance to society, and need to be valued and supported. I have been involved with Mohiniyattam for over three decades, running the Center for Mohiniyattam in New Delhi along with my Guru-mother Bharati Shivaji. We are proud that this dance form is acknowledged today as one of the major dance forms of India and have presented it in some of the most prestigious venues in Indian and around the globe. And now, I am excited to establish the Mohiniyattam Institute in Los Angeles, and look forward to propagating this graceful dance form through performances, teaching and collaborations.”
