BEVERLY HILLS, CA-‘ Doctor’s Day 2016’ was celebrated with free surgeries on March 30 , hosted by the Association of Los Angeles Physicians of Indian Origin (ALAPIO) Lestonnac Free Clinic (LFC), Beverly Surgery Center (BSC) and Joy of Sharing Foundation (JOSF). Beverly Surgery Center opened their doors early to welcome seven patients who were waiting for surgeries for different types of conditions for years. As per Ed Geber, Executive Director of LFC. Dr. Naphtali Gomez performed surgery for four hernia patients and an endoscopy, while Dr. Bharat Patel performed three surgeries (approx. $ 60,000 value) on two patients. Kristine Caldwell Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist(CRNA), Leon Rinehart(CRNA) and Dr. Nitin Shah (Anesthesiologist) provided anesthesia. One of the hernias was big and the patient could have developed a complication necessitating emergency surgery. Patients were prepared by LFC staff prior to surgery including preoperative investigations and were screened by Dr. Shah in the Orange clinic. BSC staff provided all other services including lunch.
ALAPIO, BSC, JOSF& LFC will be doing more free surgeries in the future and seek help of all practitioners. The team is also looking for ambulatory surgery centers or hospitals who can help them perform free surgeries.
