classical music lovers who had gathered for the event. Chief Guest Gurbaksh Singh Bhasin lit the lamp amidst the singing of the Punjabi folk song, “Balle Balle Bai Tohr Mehmanna Di” and then officially began with the shabad recitation by the students of Bhai Mardana Institute of Music, Bay area, in Raag Kalyaan. Guest of honor and Punjabi film star, Kimmi Verma, while speaking on the occasion said she was amazed with the talent on display and added that the biggest regret of her life was she could not learn singing. Professor Ranjit Singh of Bhai Mardana Institute of Music while thanking Rabinder Dhir and Gagandeep Sidhu for their work, said the mission of the institute was to promote and teach Indian classical music to the younger generation.
The main vocalist of the evening was Ramneek Kaur from Canada, a disciple of Ustaad Amir Khan and from the Indore Gharana. She enthralled all by singing Raag Jog, an evening melody, in three different compositions. She began in atti vilambit and then moved on to dhrut in teen taal. Kaur also sang a shabad, ‘Mai Man Mero Bas Nahi’. She was accompanied by Jasmeet Singh Chana on tabla, Hardeep Singh Chana on harmonium and Bhupinder Kaur on tanpura.
Kinnar Kumar Seen of the Punjab Gharana who flew in from New York to participate in the event, played sitar and won the hearts of the audience. Seen played Raag Charukeshi. The alaap of the composition was in jhap taal, bandish in teen taal and the layakari in choola. He was accompanied by Jasmeet Singh Chana on tabla. Jasmeet Singh Chana, Jaipal Singh and Sahib Singh presented a beautiful percussion jugalbandhi. In their segment they focused on the kaida composed by Ustad Bahadur Singh. The trio was accompanied by Hardeep Singh Chana on harmonium and Kanwar Singh on dilruba. Bhavandeep Singh Zakhmi presented a semi-classical ghazal, “Upni Tasveer Ko Aankhon Se Lagatta Kyu Hai” originally sung by Gulam Ali Khan and a Punjabi folk song ‘Asi Pind’c Maraak Naal Rehna’. Students of Bhai Mardana Institute of Music Los Angeles presented a classical composition, ‘Gunee Sang Avgun Na Keej-ea’. Senior and junior teams of BMMI presented Gidda, enjoyed by the audience. Prof. Surinder Singh Atwal, presenter and promoter of Akal Channel, England and Ravinder Kaur Pinky emceed the event.
