The evening began with the chanting of the Navkar Mantra by Roopa Kothari. Rajendra Vora, Founder & President of the group welcomed the elite gathering and welcomed new members to the group. He also introduced the honoree of the evening Nimmi Ragunathan, author and editor of India Journal.
Honoree Nimmi Raghunathan was presented with a certificate of congressional recognition from the office of Congressman Ted W Lieu (D-33) for “outstanding contribution to the Indian American community through a career dedicated to telling the stories of Indian Americans and for working to connect the United States & India through storytelling and journalism.” There was also a certificate from the California Legislature and Assembly Member Richard Bloom (D-50).
In her talk, she began by telling the audience that Vora had been amongst the earliest to subscribe to her newspaper. She spoke of the evolving role of India Journal from being the conduit of news from India to becoming the voice of a growing and maturing community. The task of the paper was to articulate positions on policies as it directly affected the future of the generation growing up here. Journalism, she said, after the 2016 elections was no longer a neutral one with journalists who had so far been trained to seek opinion on both sides of the aisle clearing stating their preferences.
Nimmi Raghunathan also spoke about Chinmaya Mission and Swami Ishwarananda who heads the Los Angeles center and with whom she has been a co-author. At the conclusion, the elite gathering lined up to get the book, ‘Darkness to Light,’ signed. The first Asian American elected to the Los Angeles City Council, David Ryu praised Vora for heading the group and making it a leading chapter internationally. Ryu, touched on many issues related to Asians and the red hot topic of affordable housing. He presented Certificate of Recognition of Nimmi Raghunathan. Members enjoyed mouth-watering appetizers, delicious dinner and a variety of desserts. Singer Kavita Narayanaswamy & DJ entertained that filled the hall.
