ARTESIA, CA – The new-look Pioneer Boulevard that runs through the heart of ‘Little India” in downtown Artesia, was officially re-opened at a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 16. Artesia Mayor Victor Manalo alongwith members of the City Council and the Artesia Chamber of Commerce where present at the event.
ARTESIA, CA – The new-look Pioneer Boulevard that runs through the heart of ‘Little India” in downtown Artesia, was officially re-opened at a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 16. Two phases of the reconstruction are now complete running between the 91 Freeway to the north and 183rd Street to the south. The new –look boulevard has been redeveloped into a pedestrian friendly promenade – allowing for more pedestrians and fewer vehicles. The boulevard has been reduced to one lane in each direction with wider sidewalks for pedestrians.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Manalo said the vision the City had of creating an inviting environment both locally and regionally has seen fruition. The main purpose of the redevelopment project is to promote socio-economic, environmental and cultural well being of the community now and in the future. The core mission was to provide efficient services and infrastructure . The project is a result of years of planning and the hard work of various members of the City staff who worked in consultation and collaboration with the Council. Today Pioneer Blvd is a safe place to walk, with wider sidewalks and slow traffic. It is shopper-friendly, allowing for visitors to walk around leisurely , window shop eat and just enjoy the atmosphere.
Manalo wished to debunk a misconception that the redevelopment was purely aimed at economic benefit. He highlighted that it was necessary for the City to increase its revenue to provide services, create more jobs and local tax dollars so as to increase the economic health of the entire community. He urged local residents to shop in Artesia so that tax dollars did not go outside the City as was the case in the past. However, he made it clear that Artesia was not taking away from the economic vitality of surrounding cities but aimed at adding to the economic vitality of the region as a whole.
He also encouraged visitors and locals to experience the Boulevard at night when it is all lit up. With summer round the corner, it would be worth spending an evening strolling down the promenade, he said.
The third phase of the redevelopment project is still underway which will focus mainly on developing a large pedestrian promenade on 183rd Street to host lively events and public engagements . The project will include constructing water features, fountains, a performance venue, street furniture and landscaping. This will be a very unique pl ace with nothing like this in the area , where people can gather in Artesia, Manlo said.Manlo reiterated his commitment to businesses in the area assuring them that the City would continue to support them by making improvements so they could keep investing and growing their business in a win-win situation. He extended his thanks and acknowledged the vision and work of many who made the project possible.
