Thousands of fans of Bollywood music gathered at the Jordan High School auditorium here, on May 3 evening to hear Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan perform live in a musical extravaganza organized by The Shah Foundation to mark the celebrations of 100 years...

Alka Yagnik, dolled up in a white lehenga and pink long choli with zari, nakshi and crystal enhanced decorative patterns, entered the stage while singing her song, “Tum Pass Aye” from the movie ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ that had created a sensation in 1998. While addressing the huge crowd, she said it was the love of the people of LA that brought her here. During the performance she encouraged the audience to sing along with her. When she sang ‘Lal Dupatta Udd Gya’ she asked viewers wearing red colored dupattas to come up to the stage and dance with her.
When she sang her romantic number, ‘Dekha Tum Ko Jab Se’ from the movie ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, she urged the couples to hold each other’s hands. She used the length and breadth of the big stage to reach her fans rather then limiting herself. She also presented a fusion medley of her songs. For a period of time, it felt as if it was only Alka, her music and melody that had taken over time. Her non stop performance of all time favorite songs captivated the emotions and sentiments of the audience.
The star performer, Udit Narayan, who is also known as man with the sweetest voice and has crooned some of the best romantic Bollywood hits, won the hearts of all with his foot tapping and heart throbbing numbers. He sang most of his popular number to enthrall the audience starting from ‘Papa Kehte Hain Bada Naam Karega,’ ‘Tere Naam, Jaadu Teri Nazar,’ ‘Kya Karoo Kya Na Karoo,’ ‘Janam Dekhlo Mit Gaye Durian’ and many more. He brought the house down when he sang one of his most popular numbers, ‘Chhora Ganga Kinare Wala’ and ‘Main Nikla Gaddi Leke’ Needless to say when the two singers came together to perform, the audience was treated to some of the best songs of the Indian music industry. They were accompanied by Udit-Alka Band of Musicians from Bollywood. Earlier Deepa Narayan, wife of Udit Narayan and Preeti Shah from Las Vegas showcased their singing talent. Organizer of the event, Rashmi Shah spoke with nostalgia of when speaking about the past 100 years of Indian movies and said music lovers will always remain in debt to K.L Sehgal, Mohd. Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar for their contributions and added Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan had taken the tradition of excellence forward. Shah also talked about the contributions of ‘The Shah Foundation’ for imparting education to 1400 students in the rural India and said the foundation was building a college in village Mandi Bahora in Dist. Sagar, in Madhya Pradesh, which will be up and running in a year. Pooja Batra, former Miss India, actress and model on the occasion introduced ‘Mera Sangeet LA’ a leading Bollywood radio station in the US that has started airing from LA recently. Kavita Bajaj of Sitarre TV emceed the event.
