ANAHEIM , CA – The Shrimad Rajchandra Love and Care ‘Make a Difference’ Charity Gala was held on May 21 evening, at The Clubhouse at Anaheim Hills. Funds exceeding a million dollars were raised for the construction of a new 200 bed multi-specialty charitable hospital in Dharampur, Gujarat in India.
Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur is an organization through which the Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital has been able to offer a variety of medical services to those in need . Entirely volunteer driven, this hospital is regularly over occupied at 130-140% capacity.
The evening began with about 250 guests mingling over delicious snacks after which they were ushered into the main hall .The program began with a Navkar Mantra, Jain prayer, sang by Kavita Narayanswami. Continuing on Mahesh Wadher, Shrimad Rajchandra Love and Care USA Trustee, welcomed the guests going on to introduce the master of ceremonies for the evening, comedian Rajiv Satyal, who needs no introduction to SoCal audiences. Satyal came on stage to entertain the guests with his jokes.
“I think a lot of Indians became Republicans because of the elephant,”said Satyal to which the audience laughed heartily.
Satyal then invited Dr. Chintan Mehta to give a hospital presentation. Mehta spoke on the plight of the tribal communities and what the current Shrimad Raj-chandra Hospital is doing to help. Additionally, Mehta explained the need and plans of the new hospital with a video presentation.”We need something greater,” said Dr. Mehta.
Subsequently, a few speeches were presented to those in attendance. Rhea Mehta , a 20 year old volunteer who has seen first-hand how the healthcare she took for granted in the US was not readily available to the children in India said,”This project is close to my heart because it hit home.” Dr. Nitin Shah spoke of the needs of India, where Shrimad Rajchandra Love and Care fit, and how the donations raised will be used.”We need to do something for our Mother State,” said Dr. Shah.
Anya Shah, 14-year-old, cancer survivor and motivation speaker, spoke about her experience as a cancer patient, how she received care at the City of Hope, and demonstrated her appreciation for everyone who helped her get better. She implored to the audience to donate generously so every child has the opportunity to beat cancer like her.”All of you here have the opportunity to save the lives of children and adults in India,” said Shah.
Now came time for fundraising for the new hospital. Satyal called on stage professional auctioneer, Rick Werner, to facilitate the process. Werner with the assistance of his son, Levi, took bids for amounts ranging in $100 to $100,000.
Generous donations were made by Popat and Kalpna Savla, Jasvant and Meera Modi, and Mahesh and Usha Wadher, along with many others. Together the amount raised came close to $500, 000. Then Manu Shah, SarvaMangal Family Trust, took the opportunity to inform the audience that SarvaMangal Family Trust will match dollar for dollar raised, up to $500,000. With this news Werner, Satyal, and everyone else in attendance geared up to work harder to raise the remaining amount so that SarvaMangal Family Trust would match the amount raised. Thanks to the assistance of Manu and Rika Shah of SarvaMangal Family Trust, the goal of $1 milliion was not only met but exceeded.
In this excitement dinner was served. Guests were treated to Jain food while listening to Narayanswami and Rashid Raja sing from a variety of eras. An auction followed dinner . The vacation packages on auction were four destinations and five packages. Attendees put up their bids and with most of the packages auctioned off, more funds were raised. Bringing the evening to a close, Dilip Parekh, Los Angeles Chapter Head, thanked all those who assisted in making the event possible and a success.
