NEWARK, CA - Over 500 people participated in a gun violence town hall organized by Congressman Ro Khanna and featuring Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr held at the Newark Memorial High School on Mar 12. Students had the opportunity to ask Kerr questions. “When people say stick to sports, stick to coaching, whatever -- that means nothing. We all have a voice,” said Kerr as he addressed the audience.

Khanna organized the Town Hall following the mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida. He and Kerr had a conversation about gun violence and Kerr agreed to do the event. “It shows that he’s a citizen first. He’s a patriot first and I just have tremendous regard for him. He has nothing to gain by doing this. He just wants to make an impact,”Khanna told the media.
As is widely known,Kerr’s own father a professor and scholar was killed by gun violence in a terrorist attack in Lebanon.”I know what that feels like. It’s awful. It’s devastating. It’s horrifying. This is pretty simple let’s see if we can do something about it,” Kerr told the students and officials.
Kerr is considered among the most intelligent of coaches in the NBA. He has instituted several team building techniques that have won him the love of players and fans alike. He has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump. His team, had publicly said they would not visit the White House after becoming Champs. Instead they visited the African-American museum in Washington,D.C. His influence goes beyond interviews with sports and news reporters. He has more than 337-thousand followers on Twitter reported abc7news. His last ten tweet’s have been related to gun violence.
“It’s become kind of my personal crusade with the media, but I can do more. I’d like to know what more I can do, maybe I can get my team involved more. Yeah,” said Kerr followed by applause from the audience.
“You guys are gonna do it. It’s the next generation. It’s the youth. You guys are gonna do it.” He likened the current gun violence movement to that of the anti-war activism during Vietnam. He urged students to vote and make gun violence their number one issue
Khanna told reporters Congress is working on the issue of gun violence. “We’re pushing for a vote. We’re pushing for a vote on background checks, we’re pushing for a vote on banning high capacity magazines, on banning AR-15’s. But right now, to be candid, there has been no vote scheduled and it all depends on Paul Ryan who has the complete power,” said Khanna. Both he and Kerr expressed their desire that the gun violence issue move beyond party politics.
