NEW DELHI - Works by Pulitzer Prize-winning Indian American novelist Jhumpa Lahiri figure in the 20-book longlist for this year’s Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction. “The Lowland”. Launched in 1996, the Prize celebrates excellence, originality and accessibility in women’s writing from throughout the world. The winner receives a cheque for 30,000 pounds and a limited edition bronze known as a ‘Bessie’, created by the artist Grizel Niven. Both are anonymously endowed. Set in Kolkata and Rhode Island in the US, “The Lowland” is about the lives of brothers Subhash and Udayan, their choices and their fate.
The five-woman jury, headed by Penguin Books UK’s managing director Helen Fraser, will announce the shortlist on April 7. The prize will be announced on June 4. Last year’s winner was US writer A M Holmes for her work “May We Be Forgiven”. (PTI)
