SACRAMENTO, CA - Governor Jerry G. Brown announced the appointment of Somnath Raj Chatterjee to a judgeship in the Alameda County Superior Court and Neetu S. The South Asian Bar Association of Southern California (SABA-SC) applauded the appointment of Badhan-Smith saying that the appointment further diversifies California’s judiciary with an accomplished and well-respected member of the bar. Badhan-Smith will be only the third woman of South Asian descent to serve as a California Superior Court judge.
SABA-SC congratulated Badhan-Smith on this achievement and looks forward to her tenure on the bench. Attorney Navneet Chugh Founder President of SABA-SC while commending Badhan-Smith on her appointment said she had made the Indian-American community very proud. Chatterjee, 47, of Oakland, has been a partner at Antolin Agarwal and Chatterjee. Earlier, he was a partner at Morrison and Foerster. He served as a deputy public defender at the Contra Costa County Public Defender’s Office.He earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Chatterjee fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Steven A. Brick.
