NEW DELHI - The toll in India following Saturday's earthquake has gone up to 72, with Bihar accounting for 56 deaths, a top official said on Monday. Home Secretary L.C. Goyal, addressing the media at a joint press conference with Defence Secretary R.K. Mathur and Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar, said 12 people died in Uttar Pradesh following the earthquake.
"The number of casualties is 72. It is 56 in Bihar, 12 in Uttar Pradesh, three in West Bengal and one in Rajasthan," Goyal said. e said 175 people were injured in Bihar, 35 in West Bengal, 70 in Uttar Pradesh, nine in Sikkim and seven in Rajasthan. Saturday's earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, and its aftershocks have left over 3,700 people dead and 6,500 injured in Nepal.
