AAP overseas cell.Volunteers organized various events across 19 cities in the US, including Washington DC, New York, New Jersey, Boston, Houston and San Francisco, to create awareness about the grave drug problem that has gripped the state. Events were organized near Gurudwaras and melas with big Punjabi communities. Volunteers interacted with the citizens explaining the gravity of the current situation and need for the government’s immediate intervention to improve it. Sreekanth Kocharlakota, secretary of AAP USA said: “The mission here is to give a clear and strong message that we are ready to kick nasha out of Punjab. We invite everyone to support this initiative to achieve our dream of a Glorious Punjab”.
Thousands of volunteers around the world took a pledge to never use illegal drugs, help get rid of others’ addiction and create more awareness on this menace. Social Media saw lot of action as volunteers tweeted personal stories, video messages and posters against drugs with hashtag #KickNasha which was trending on top of Twitter on June 26 night in India. Pradeep Sundriyal, convenor of AAP USA said: “It is no secret that drugs and other prohibited substances are easily and publicly available in Punjab. The drastic and dangerous impact of this is obvious: almost 18% of Punjab population is addicted to hard drugs and either Badal government is in collusion with drug mafia or completely incapable of dealing with the situation.” Volunteers also gathered support for a petition addressed to the President of India which requested immediate intervention to take strict action against the culprits, who are distributing drugs, and those providing safe passage for such operations in Punjab. Other demands include to treat citizens who fall prey to substance abuse as victims instead of criminals; to provide adequate and affordable health care for their speedy recovery and to appoint an autonomous and independent body to oversee the implementation of these measures. “People of Punjab have suffered a lot under the misrule of successive SAD-BJP and Congress governments, who have not only ignored this growing menace but also some elements in their government have actively colluded with the drug mafia for personal gains. We will not tolerate this and we will continue to push the government to either take action or get out” said Manmeet Singh, one of the coordinators of AAP Pravasi USA.
