controversy :P.” Weeks’s life has been a roller coaster ride for the last few months. After she was outed as porn star Belle Knox by a fellow classmate, Weeks says she has experienced everything from public scorn to people telling her she should kill herself.
Weeks, now a celebrated feminist activist around the Internet – and a women’s studies major, to boot – has stuck by her guns, saying that she feels liberated and empowered by her porn career, not ashamed.
In addition to acting in porn films, Weeks has also taken up the rights of sex workers as something of a personal crusade. In interviews with Piers Morgan, the Huffington Post, and other news outlets, she has said that she wants to help de-stigmatize the porn industry, and gain some amount of oversight and regulation for sex workers. She feels that pornography is just another way of making a living, and should therefore be treated like any other job.
Her initial reason for getting into pornography is, according to her, to help alleviate her family’s financial burden by financing her college tuition herself. Knox realized that pornography was an easy and lucrative way to make some money for herself. Duke University has said they support the decision, and will (obviously) still accept the money Weeks pays them, regardless of where it came from. Her family has also stuck by her, despite early reports saying that they were threatening to cut her off if she didn’t quit pornography. The daughter of a celebrated military doctor from Washington state, and a mother from India, Weeks has an older brother and sister, the former of which is reportedly very religious and has had trouble coping with his sister’s new side job.
Weeks continues to take classes at Duke University, finding time for her porn shoots – which pay as much as $2,000 each – on weekends and other holidays. She has said that she plans to spend a large portion of her upcoming summer vacation filming several porn movies, so that she can earn enough to pay for next year’s tuition.
