
ALISO VIEJO,CA- SOKA University observed Gandhi Jayanti on Oct 2 with Indian-Americans and SOKA members in prayer meetings and paying homage in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on campus. A peace walk was also organized to the Gandhi statue followed by a lamp lighting ceremony by Swami Ishwarnanda of Chinmaya Mission Los Angeles. Swami Ishwarnanda spoke on Gandhi, his values and his principles.
He enlightened the audience on how Gandhi started the Satyagraha or non-violence movement for the Indian freedom struggle and played a very significant role in achieving independence for India from British rule. His quotation” Be the change you wish to see in the world” was emphasized. Garlands of beautiful flowers were placed on the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The event concluded with lunch for all and a cultural performance by local dance groups on the Gandhi Jayanti theme.
