Stage Paint Productions and Mike Sethi of Sethi Law Group, was enacted at the Valencia High School auditorium on July 29. The play in English, is director Rajat Kapoor’s take on Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Macbeth.’ The original play told the story of Macbeth, a Scottish general, and how he receives a prophecy from three witches who tell him that he will become the King of Scotland. After getting such insight and filled with ambition, Macbeth and his wife plan to make that happen. So Macbeth murders King Duncan to have the throne for himself. Then consumed with guilt Macbeth becomes paranoid and continues to kill more and more to keep up the façade.
Kapoor’s version took this classic tragedy and attempted to turn it into a comedy with all of the characters dressed up and made up as clowns, thus making it difficult to recognize who the actors were that were playing the characters.
However since some of the actors are well-known from the Bollywood industry, they were somewhat easier to distinguish. Kalki Koechlin, known for her roles in ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,’ played one of the three witches and one of the three Lady Macbeths. Ranvir Shorey last seen in ‘Gour Hari Dastaan’ and ‘Happy Ending’ portrayed Macky B, and the last identifiable actor was Vinay Pathak known for his roles in ‘Badlapur’ and ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi,’ portrayed Kapoor’s character of Pedro who was not in the original Macbeth.
Even though Kapoor kept the original story line of Macbeth, his version of the play was confusing and not easily understood . To those familiar with Shakespeare, who have studied his works the the play may have been easier to comprehend.
The most uncertain and perplexing aspect of Kapoor’s version is why he had three women portray Lady Macbeth. In Shakespeare’s play, Lady Macbeth is a strong ambitious and ruthless women who urges her husband to murder Duncan to fulfill the prophecy. In Kapoor’s version, Lady Macbeth has all of those characteristics but it is unclear why he needed three women to play one role.
Additionally, Kapoor added more characters to his version of the play - Pedro and Julio. These two were the leading actors who lead us into the play. Vinay Pathak as well as the individual who played Julio were the producers of the play.
Overall, the actors did a phenomenal job portraying their respective characters. The play, on the other hand, did not translate well into the genre of comedy from tragedy.
