WINNETKA, CA – The India Association of Los Angeles (IALA) celebrated India's Republic Day on Feb.1 at the Venus Banquet Hall, here. The event drew over 300 people. The evening began with the national anthems of the US and India sung by young girls from 5 to 10 years old, followed by a plethora of Indian folk dances by kids of various ages including as little as four. The audience also enjoyed performances by students of the various dance schools in the region:
WINNETKA, CA – The India Association of Los Angeles (IALA) celebrated India's Republic Day on Feb.1 at the Venus Banquet Hall, here. The event drew over 300 people. The evening began with the national anthems of the US and India sung by young girls from 5 to 10 years old, followed by a plethora of Indian folk dances by kids of various ages including as little as four. The audience also enjoyed performances by students of the various dance schools in the region:
Katha Kala Kendra of Rachana Upadhyay, Shriangari School of Dance, Electro-Battles School of Bollywood Dance and Chhandam School of Kathak. Akshay Hari, the 2012 contender of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa a Zee TV show lent his melodious vocals to the evening. The event was kicked off by a short speech by Founder and Past President Inder Singh who spoke of the historical significance of India's Republic Day and the importance of such events being held by the community. Stressing engagement in the mainstream, he pointed out the need and duty to vote on election day and spoke of the recent successes Indian-Americans have had in electoral politics.
Current President and Co-Founder Kumar Jawa thanked entire community for their overwhelming response, show of strength and support. This is Kumar's second successful term as President. All the Board of Directors and Executive Members of IALA were introduced. The strength of the Association was evident from the huge crowd that had gathered in the hall and those who were trying to get in, not to mention over 30 performers waiting to do their performances and be part of the celebrations, IALA officials said. While the invited chief guest, Congressman Brad Sherman was not present, his Senior Policy Deputy John Alford attended on his behalf and presented IALA with a flag flown over Captiol Hill. The program was emceed by Harish Amar.
